| British princess, born at Glamis Castle, Angus, E Scotland, UK, the second daughter of George VI and sister of Elizabeth II. In 1955, when she was third in succession to the throne, she denied rumours of her possible marriage to Group-Captain Peter Townsend (a divorcé), amid a great deal of publicity and concern that a constitutional crisis could be precipitated by such a marriage. In 1960 she married Antony Armstrong-Jones (divorced, 1978), who was created Viscount Linley and Earl of Snowdon in 1961. The former title devolved upon their son, David Albert Charles (1961– ), who married Serena Alleyne Stanhope in 1993. Their daughter is Sarah Frances Elizabeth (1964– ), who married Daniel Chatto in 1994, and they have a son, Samuel David Benedict Chatto (1996– ). |
