| Maori leader, born in Waikato, New Zealand. Of chiefly rank and a skilled organizer, from 1911 she began to acquire influence within the Maori nationalist movement, Kingitanga. By 1930 she had built it into a major instrument for the social and cultural rehabilitation of the Maori, and for the settlement of grievances arising from colonial rule. |
