| Eldest son of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, and heir apparent to the throne, born at Buckingham Palace, London, UK. Duke of Cornwall as the eldest son of the monarch, he was given the title of Prince of Wales in 1958, and invested at Caernarfon (1969). He studied at Cheam and Gordonstoun, and entered Trinity College, Cambridge, in 1967. He served in the RAF and Royal Navy, (1971–6), and in 1981 married Lady Diana Frances, younger daughter of the 8th Earl Spencer. They had two sons: Prince William Arthur Philip Louis (1982– ) and Prince Henry Charles Albert David (1984– ). The couple separated in 1992, and divorced in 1996. During this period he was, along with Princess Diana, the focus of continual media interest, attracting unprecedented attention from biographers. Diana was killed in a car crash in 1997. Charles is noted for his views on conservation and community architecture. In 1976 he founded the Prince's Trust, which provides training opportunities for young people. |
