| biography:
| Second son of Queen Victoria, born at Windsor Castle, Windsor, S England, UK. He studied at Bonn and Edinburgh before entering the Royal Navy in 1858. In 1866 he was created Duke of Edinburgh, and in 1874 married the Russian Grand Duchess Marie Alexandrovna (1853–1920). In 1893 he succeeded his uncle as reigning Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha. During World War 1, the other members of the British royal family abandoned the name Saxe-Coburg-Gotha in favour of Windsor, as a means of asserting the Englishness of royalty and playing down the extent of its German blood. |
