| biography:
| Leader of the Huguenots during the French Wars of Religion, born in Vendôme, C France, the younger brother of Antony of Bourbon (1518–61), king of Navarre. He fought in the wars between Henry II and Spain (1551–7), and joined the Huguenots on the accession of Francis II (1559). He was defeated at Dreux during the first civil war (1562); and in the second war (1567–9) was defeated at Jarnac, taken prisoner, and shot. |
