| biography:
| French military leader, born in Paris, France. During the Thirty Years' War he defeated the Spaniards (1643, 1648) and Bavarians (1645–6). The court party came to terms with the Fronde by his help; but his arrogance led to his imprisonment, and when he was released he joined the rebels. Defeated at the Battle of the Dunes, near Dunkirk (1658), he was then pardoned, and became one of Louis XIV's greatest generals, defeating the Spanish in Franche-Comté (1668) and William of Orange at Seneffe (1674). Ill health led to his retirement to Chantilly. |
