| Laotian politician and state president (1975–87), born in Luang Prabang, W Laos. He studied engineering in Paris, returned to his home country in 1938 to enter Nationalist politics. He founded the Lao Independence Front with Chinese backing to fight French rule and, in 1954, the ruling rightist Lao Issara. With the country's emergence as a Socialist republic (1975), he was given the honorific post of state president. |
