| biography:
| Royalist commander in the English Civil War, born in Prague, Czech Republic, the third son of the Elector Palatine Frederick V and Elizabeth, the daughter of James I of England. A notable cavalry leader, he won several victories in the major battles of the war, but was defeated at Marston Moor (1644), and after his surrender of Bristol he was dismissed by Charles I. Banished by parliament, he led the small Royalist fleet until it was routed by Blake (1650). He escaped to the West Indies, returning to Europe in 1653, and lived in Germany until the Restoration. |
