| biography:
| Russian soldier, the cousin of Prince Alexander Gorchakov. He served against the French in the Napoleonic campaign (1812–14), and in the Russo-Turkish War (1828–9). He helped to suppress the Polish revolution of 1831 and the Hungarian insurrection in 1849. He was appointed commander-in-chief in the Crimea (1855), was defeated on the Tchernaya, but recovered his laurels by his gallant defence of Sebastopol. He later became military governor of Poland (1856–61). |
