| Writer, born in Adams Co, Mississippi, USA. He studied at Jefferson College in Mississippi, and at Mobile Medical College. After service with the Confederate army in the Civil War, he became a soldier of fortune in Mexico, Austria, Crete, Africa, and Cuba. He became a writer of popular historical ‘dime novels’ for the Beadle series, and also wrote plays, short stories, and poetry. He was best known for writing a highly romanticized biography of his friend, William Cody, that created his reputation as ‘Buffalo Bill’. At various intervals he lived in London, New York City, and Chicago. |
