| Danish politician and prime minister (1982–93), born in Tønder, SW Denmark. After studying at Aarhus and Copenhagen universities he had a successful career in law, became leader of the Conservative Youth movement in 1944, and national leader seven years later. Elected an MP, he joined the executive committee of the Conservative People's Party in 1964, becoming its chairman (1972). His 1982 premiership of a centre-right coalition survived the 1987 and 1990 elections, after which he reconstituted the coalition with Liberal support. He became vice-president of the European Parliament in 1994, and in 1999 held a number of business directorships. |
