| biography:
| Greek Stoic philosopher, scientist, and polymath, born in Apamea, Syria. He studied at Athens as a pupil of Panaetius, spent many years on travel and scientific research in Europe and Africa, then settled in Rhodes. In 86 BC he was sent as an envoy to Rome, where he became a friend of Cicero and other leading figures. He wrote on an enormous range of subjects, and made important contributions to the development of Stoic doctrines. |
