| biography:
| Writer, born in San Sebastián, N Spain. In 1913 his sister, Carmen Baroja, married Rafael Caro Raggio, founder of the Baroja family publishing house (1917). His first book of short stories, Vidas sombrías (1900, Sombre Lives), was the prelude to more than 70 volumes of novels and essays, distinguished by quiet humour and a vivid style derived from the 19th-c Russian and French masters. His best novels are those with a Basque setting. |
