| biography:
| Pope (1903–14), born in Riese, Sicily, S Italy. Ordained in 1858, he became Bishop of Mantua (1884), cardinal and patriarch of Venice (1893), and in 1903 was elected pope. He condemned theological modernism and revolutionary movements in his encyclical Pascendi (1907), but was a champion of social reforms. He reformed the liturgy, re-codified canon law, and was canonized in 1954. Feast day 21 August. |
