| biography:
| Pope (1566–72), born near Alessandria, N Italy. He became a bishop in 1556, and a cardinal in 1557. As pope he implemented the decrees of the Council of Trent (1545–63), excommunicated Elizabeth I (1570), and organized the expedition against the Turks, that resulted in the naval engagement of Lepanto (1571). He was canonized in 1712. Feast day 30 April. |
