| biography:
| Pope (1800–23), born in Cesena, E Italy. He became a cardinal in 1785. He arranged a concordat with Napoleon, and in 1804 was compelled to consecrate him as emperor. In 1809 the French annexed the Papal States. Pius was removed to Grenoble, then to Fontainebleau, and forced to sign a new concordat sanctioning the annexation. The fall of Napoleon (1814) allowed his return to Rome, and papal territory was restored by the Congress of Vienna. |
