| biography:
| Pope (1559–65), born in Milan, N Italy. He became Archbishop of Requsa in 1547, and a cardinal in 1549. He brought to a close the deliberations of the Council of Trent, and issued the Creed of Pius IV (the Tridentine Creed) in 1564. He reformed the sacred college of cardinals, instituted the Index of Forbidden Books, and encouraged St Teresa of Avila. A notable patron of the arts, he built many public buildings and patronized Michelangelo. |
