| biography:
| Pope, born in Corsignano, C Italy. He held a number of diplomatic posts and was secretary to Emperor Frederick III before becoming pope in 1458. He tried, unsuccessfully, to join Christian rulers in a league against the Turks. He restructured the town of Pienza, which was part of his family's domains, in a quest to create the ideal city. A patron of the arts and a writer, he published Commentarii (1463). |
