| biography:
| Historian, theologian, and patriot, born in Venice, NE Italy. He entered the Servite Order in 1565, and became vicar-general in 1599. He studied a wide range of subjects, and is credited with various anatomical discoveries. He was the champion of Venice in the dispute with Pope Paul V (reigned 1605–21) over the immunity of clergy from the jurisdiction of civil tribunals, resisting the intrusion of Rome in the internal affairs of the Republic. Excommunicated and seriously wounded by assassins, he turned to writing his great Istoria del Concilio Tridentino (1619, History of the Council of Trent), published in London. |
