| Italian statesman, born in Faenza, NEC Italy. An agitator at 17, as editor of Avanti he was exiled by the Fascists (1926). He became secretary-general of the Italian Socialist Party (1944), vice-premier in the Gasperi coalition cabinet (1945–6), and foreign minister (1946–7). His pro-Soviet party did not break finally with the Communists till 1956. In 1963 Nenni became deputy prime minister in the coalition government, including Social Democrats and Socialists. He succeeded in his longstanding aim of uniting the two groups as the United Socialist Party (1966), but in the 1968 elections the Socialists withdrew from the coalition. He was foreign minister in a new coalition from December 1968, but resigned in July 1969. |
