| Painter, founder of the Sienese school, born in Siena, C Italy. In his work the Gothic tradition in Italian art is seen in its most highly developed state. His masterpiece is the ‘Maestà’ for the altar of Siena cathedral (1311), from which came the ‘Annunciation’ and ‘Transfiguration’ in the National Gallery, London. |
