| biography:
| Playwright, born in Venice, NE Italy. After a period in the army, he took up writing in Venice. Among his works are several satirical poems and plays, defending the traditions of the commedia dell'arte against the innovations of Goldoni and others. His best-known works include the comedy, Fiaba dell' amore delle tre melarance (1761, The Love of the Three Oranges) and Re Turandot (1762, made into an opera by Puccini). His brother, Gasparo Gozzi (1713–86) was a journal editor and press censor, who also became known for his verse satires. |
