| Writer and patriot, born in Milan, Lombardy, N Italy. A founder of the anti-Austrian literary review Il Conciliatore, he was arrested in 1822 and spent 13 years in the infamous Spilberk jail. He was deported to the USA, but returned to Italy in 1838 and took part in the Five Days of Milan insurrection in 1848. He wrote a definitive essay on Italian Romanticism, Avventure letterarie di un giorno (1816). |
