| biography:
| Astronomer, born in Reggio nell'Emilia, N Italy. Trained as a Jesuit priest, he lectured in physics and mathematics at the Jesuit College in Loreto. When the Jesuits were expelled from Rome in 1848 he became professor of physics at Georgetown University, Washington, DC, but was allowed to return in 1849 to become director of the observatory at the Collegio Romano. He originated the classification of stars by spectrum analysis. |
