| biography:
| Revolutionary politician, born in Colombo, Sri Lanka, the son of a Dutch protestant minister in Ceylon. He studied philosophy and law at Utrecht. He became a democrat and supported the Patriots, encouraging their taking up arms in 1787. After the arrival of the Prussian army he fled to France and returned with the French in 1795, under whom he held office for some years. He made his peace with the new Orange government after 1813, and in 1816 was appointed a member of the Supreme Court in Batavia (Netherlands East Indies). |
