| biography:
| Dutch democratic politician and lawyer, born in Purmerend, W Netherlands. During 1917–33 he was an MP for the Vrijzinnig Democratische Bond (VDB - liberal democratic). As minister of finance (1933–7) he devalued the guilder in 1936 and left the Gold Standard. He was Burgomaster of Rotterdam in 1938–52 (except for the years of German occupation). With his liberal-democratic party he joined the Partij van de Arbeid (PvdA) in 1946, but resigned in 1947 over their Indonesian policy. In 1948 his lib-dem faction merged with the then Partij van de Vrijheid (liberal) into the Volkspartij voor Vrijheid en Democratie (liberal-democratic). He was leader of the Volkspartij voor Vrijheid en Democratie (VVD) until 1963, when he became a minister of state. He was also professor of law at Rotterdam in 1952–7. |
