| Dutch Social-Democratic politician, born in Stiens, N Netherlands. He left teaching to enter politics and represented the Partij van de Arbeid (PvdA) in parliament from 1968–81. A strong supporter of the European Union and an MEP (1977–89, 1994), he served as secretary of state for foreign affairs in the third Lubbers cabinet (1989–94). |
