| Poet, born in Middelburg, SW Netherlands. He studied classical languages in Utrecht and became a teacher, before devoting himself to literature. A classicist poet who used Plato as a source of philosophical inspiration, he came under the influence of the impressionist l'art pour l'art movement of the eighties. He also translated Plato, Sophocles, Homer, Goethe, Louise Labé, and Oscar Wilde. |
