| Afrikaaner soldier and statesman, born in Prince Albert, S South Africa. Living in the Transvaal from 1840, he studied law and was elected to parliament in 1860, becoming attorney general (1870) and acting president (1875). In the 1st Boer War (1880–1) he commanded the Transvaal's forces, and defeated the British in 1881. He negotiated the Pretoria Convention (1881), became vice-president in 1883, and opposed Kruger for the presidency over the next 15 years. In the 2nd Boer War (1899–1902) he held command at the outset, but resigned from ill health and died soon afterwards. |
