| biography:
| Dutch politician and economist, born in Uithoorn, W Netherlands. Until 1960 he managed his family's factory there, then became professor of social legislation in Eindhoven, and in 1965 entered the Upper House for the Katholieke Volkspartij (KVP). A strong figure within the party, he acted as adviser in 1971 and 1982 for the formation of the cabinet, and in 1983–91 he was chairman of the Upper House. He was behind the foundation of the Christen-Democratisch Appèl (CDA), of which he was chairman (1972–80) when it operated jointly with the KVP. |
