| Dutch politician, lawyer, and economist, born in Muiden, W Netherlands. He studied law at Utrecht and economics at Columbia, USA and worked in the ministry of economic affairs (1932–4). In 1934 he became professor at Rotterdam and was co-founder of the Nederlandse Volksbeweging (Netherlands Popular Movement). In 1940–5 he was imprisoned by the Germans, partly in Buchenwald. He was minister of finance (Partij van de Arbeid) during 1945–52, when he nationalized the Nederlandse Bank, drastically reorganized the currency, raised taxes, and instituted controls on credit. During 1957–76 he was Dutch delegate to the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF). |
