| Clergyman and French statesman, born in Sérilly, near Troyes, NEC France. He studied at the Sorbonne and was ordained in 1599. A leader of the Catholic reaction against Calvinism, he introduced the Carmelite Order into France (1604) and founded the French Congregation of the Oratory (1611). He was minister of state until dismissed by Richelieu, and was made a cardinal in 1627. |
