| French soldier and clergyman, and Grand Master of the Knights Hospitallers from 1476, born in Monteil-au-Vicomte, France. His outstanding achievement was his defence of Rhodes in 1480 against a besieging army of Turks under Sultan Mohammed II. In 1481 he made a treaty with the Turks under Sultan Bayezit II by agreeing to imprison the sultan's rebellious brother, Djem; and in 1489 was created cardinal for handing Djem over to Pope Innocent VIII. |
