| Scientific instrument-maker, born in Ornans, E France. He spent most of his life serving the King of Spain in the Low Countries, and in 1631 invented the measuring caliper which now bears his name. It makes use of two graduated scales sliding parallel to each other, one of which provides accurate subdivisions of one division of the other scale. |
