| Industrialist and philanthropist, born in New Haven, Connecticut, USA. From 1920 he worked with Pierre Du Pont to reorganize and restructure General Motors, becoming its president in 1924 and later chairman of the board (1937–56). Under his guidance the company became one of the largest industrial corporations in the world. A noted philanthropist, he founded the Alfred P Sloan Foundation in 1937, and the Sloan–Kettering Institute for Cancer Research in 1945. His autobiography, My Years with General Motors (1964), is a classic in management literature. |
