| biography:
| Sculptor, painter, and architect, born in Marseille, S France. He studied in Italy (c.1640–3) and decorated palaces in Rome and Florence. He then returned to Marseille and Toulon, where he produced most of his works, such as the door of the Hôtel de Ville at Toulon (1656), designs for the chapel of the hospice de la Charité, Marseille, paintings for local churches, and decorative designs for warships. His work can be seen on the ceilings of the Berberini Palace in Rome and the Pitti Palace in Florence. Despite his renowned ‘Milo de Crotone’ (1683) and ‘Perseus délivrant Andromède’ for Versailles, his baroque and Italianate style was not popular with the court. |
