After a turbulent youth, he began with stories such as Pattes en l'Air (1911), Rire jaune (1913), and La Fin, Souvenirs d'un Correspondant aux Armées (1919), memories of World War 1. He claimed to draw his inspiration from Villon, seeking adventure in the ports and low places. Numerous novels include La Vénus internationale (1923), Nuit aux Bouges (1927), and Quai des Brûmes (1927), filmed by Marcel Carné in 1938. |
