biography: Astronomer, born in Paris, France. He studied there, became head of the Astrophysical Observatory at Meudon (1876), and greatly advanced spectrum analysis by his observation of the bright line spectrum of the solar atmosphere (1868). He established an observatory on Mont Blanc, and published a pioneering book of photographs of the Sun, Atlas de photographies solaries (1904).
