| French writer. His works include Le Sac du Palais d'Été (Prix Renaudot, 1971), Une Mort Sale (1973), the best-selling Orient Express (1979), Cordélia ou l'Angleterre (1979), and Algerie, bord de Seine. After three years as head of La Villa Médicis, he published Aria di Roma (1998), against the failings of contemporary art. He was elected a member of the Académie Française in 1988. |
