| biography:
| Jesuit missionary, born in Termonde, Belgium. He went to the USA (1821), and in 1838 began his career as a missionary to the Indians of the Plains and the Northwest. He founded mission stations, helped to negotiate peace after the Mormon War (1857–8), and effected a truce with Sitting Bull (1868). The Indians trusted him, and called him ‘Blackrobe’. |
