| Writer, born in Ambert, SC France. Former pupil of the École Française of Rome, he later became director of the École des Hautes Etudes, Conservateur de Versailles (1892–1920). He produced books on Petrarch and Humanism, Erasmus, and Ronsard, poems of Parnassian inspiration, and collections about the countryside of Auvergne, France, and Italy. Notable are his works on Versailles, Marie Antoinette, and the artists of the 18th-c. |
