| Playwright, born in Paris, France. He began writing in his 40s and created the comédie larmoyante (or ‘tearful comedy’), a drama in verse form, featuring tearful sentimental scenes and happy endings. He wrote nine such plays including Le Préjugé à la mode (1735, Stylish Prejudice) and L'École des Mères (1744, Mothers' School). In 1736 he was elected a member of the Académie Française. |
