| biography:
| French admiral, born in Valensole, SW France. He commanded the rear division of the French navy at the Battle of the Nile (1798, also known as the Battle of Aboukir Bay), and saved his vessel and four others. In 1805 he was in charge of the French fleet at Trafalgar, where he was taken prisoner. Released in 1806, he committed suicide in Rennes, during his return journey to Paris to face Napoleon. |
