| Playwright and novelist, born in Paris, France. Trained as a lawyer, he published his first play at the age of 20. He wrote several comedies, of which his best is Le Jeu de l'amour et du hasard (1730, The Game of Love and Chance). His best-known novel, La Vie de Marianne (1731–41, The Life of Marianne) was never finished, and is marked by an affected style which has been dubbed Marivaudage. Although he became director of the Académie Française in 1759, his work was not fully appreciated until after his death. |
