| biography:
| Impressionist artist, born in Limoges, C France. He first painted porcelain and fans, began to paint in the open air c.1864, and from 1870 obtained several commissions for portraits. He exhibited with the Impressionists (1874–9, 1882). His picture of sunlight filtering through leaves - Le Moulin de la Galette (1876, Louvre) - epitomizes his colourful, happy art. His visit to Italy in 1880 was followed by a series of ‘Bathers’ in a more cold and Classical style. He then returned to reds, orange, and gold to portray nudes in sunlight, a style which he continued to develop until his death. |
