| biography:
| Novelist and soldier, born in Amiens, N France. He spent nearly all his life in the army, but saw no active service until he was 60, and ended his career as a general. His one masterpiece, Les Liaisons dangereuses (1782, Dangerous Acquaintances), a novel in epistolary form, became an immediate sensation for its cynical analysis of personal and sexual relationships. It has been successfully adapted for the theatre and several films. |
