| biography:
| Sculptor, born in Angers, NW France. The son of a sculptor, he travelled widely. He studied under Jacques Louis David in Paris, and then in Rome, where he was influenced by Ingres and Canova, and was awarded the Prix de Rome in 1811. He executed the pediment of the Pantheon, in Paris (1835–7), his most prestigious commission; he was also a prolific sculptor of portrait busts and medallions. In the Angers museum 200 of his works are preserved, as well as 400 of his medallions of the leading contemporary French figures, and many drawings. |
