| Naturalist and priest, born in Brive-la-Gaillarde, SC France. Ordained in 1786, he later took charge of the entomology department at the Museum of National History (1799), where he succeeded Lamarck (1829) as professor of entomology. Elected a member of the Académie Française in 1814, he was one of the founders of modern entomology. He is best known for his pioneering work on the classification of crustaceans, arachnids, and insects (1829). His most important works are Considérations sur l'ordre naturel des animaux (1810) and Familles naturelles du règne animal (1825). |
