| Italian patriot, born in Forlì, Emilia-Romagna, N Italy. He moved to Milan in 1819 and became one of the contributors to Il Conciliatore, an anti-Austrian literary review. He also joined the Carboneria, was arrested in 1820, and sentenced to death, later commuted to 20 years in the notorious Spilberk prison, where he had a leg amputated. Pardoned in 1830, he spent his last years in exile, first in Paris, then in the USA. |
