| biography:
| Duke of Parma and Piacenza, born in Rome, Latium, Italy. He was the son of cardinal Alessandro Farnese (later Pope Paul III), and fought in the service of Venice and Emperor Charles V. He was appointed Duke of Castro (1537) by his father, also became Marquis of Novara (1538), and conquered Perugia in 1540. In 1545 the pope gave him the duchy of Parma and Piacenza. He clashed with the aristocracy and made enemies with Andrea Doria, and was victim of a conspiracy plotted by the governor of Milan, Ferrante Gonzaga, and supported by the emperor. |
